Iraqi police say a bomb explosion in central Baghdad has killed at least 10 people. The attack today (Thursday) on a market wounded about 20 other people.
Wednesday, the top U.S. military officer, General Peter Pace, said an increased American military presence in Baghdad will help Iraqi authorities deal with escalating violence. The United States is transferring several thousand troops (from elsewhere in Iraq) to the capital.
On the diplomatic front, Japanese Foreign Minister Taro Aso is making a previously unannounced visit to Baghdad today. He is the first Japanese minister to visit Iraq since the 2003 U.S.-led invasion.
Aso is meeting with Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki and Foreign Minister Hoshyar Zebari to discuss economic aid and security. Japan is one of Iraq's main aid donors.
Japan brought home its 600 troops from Iraq last month, after a two-and-a-half year reconstruction mission.
