이라크 재건사업에 대한 미 행정부의 감사결과 부정으로 손실되는 예산액이 연간 40억 달러에 달하는 것으로 밝혀졌습니다.
이라크 재건에 대한 스튜어트 보웬 특별 감사관은 최근 실시된 감사결과를 이같이 밝히면서 이라크의 부패는 이라크 민주화를 그릇치는 위협이 되고 있다고 경고했습니다.
이라크 자체의 부패방지기관은 총 50억 달러에 달하는 횡령사건과 관련 1천4백 건의 혐의사례를 조사중이라고 밝혔습니다.
이라크 재건사업을 위한 지원예산 1백90억 달러 가운데 현재 3분의 2가 지출됐습니다.

A Bush administration audit of Iraqi reconstruction programs has estimated that four billion dollars a year is lost to corruption.
The audit (by Special Inspector General for Iraq Reconstruction Stuart Bowen) warns that corruption in Iraq threatens to undermine the country's democracy.
An anticorruption agency of the Iraqi government (the Iraq Commission on Public Integrity) reports that it has opened more than one-thousand-400 criminal cases. The cases total five billion dollars in suspected theft.
Iraq has been awash in reconstruction money since the 2003 overthrow of Saddam Hussein. The U.S. Congress has approved about 19 billion dollars in funds to rebuild Iraq. But more than two-thirds of that money has been spent already.
Separately, the U.S. Justice Department on Wednesday said that a U.S. shipping company has paid the U.S. government four million dollars over allegations it inflated costs. The company, Eagle Global Logistics, was hired by U.S. contractor Halliburton Company to ship military cargo to Iraq.
