로마 카톨릭 교황 베네딕토 16세는 현 중동사태를 그 어느때 보다도 심각한 비극이라고 개탄하고 즉각적인 정전을 호소했습니다.
베네딕토 교황은 30일, 로마 근교의 카톨릭 교도 모임에서 이스라엘-헤즈볼라간 전투로 수 백 명이 사망하고 수 많은 부상자가 발생하는 등 상황이 악화되고 있음을 지적하며 이같이 호소했습니다.
베네딕토 교황은 또한 수많은 레바논 주민들이 집을 떠나 난민 생활을 하고 있으며 수많은 주택과 하부 구조들이 파괴되고 있다고 강조했습니다. 베네딕토 교황은 증오와 복수심이 점차 증대되고 있는 것으로 보인다고 덧붙였습니다.

Pope Benedict has renewed an urgent appeal for an immediate ceasefire in the Middle East, to end a crisis he describes as ever more serious and tragic.
Speaking today (Sunday) near Rome, the pontiff said he sees a deteriorating situation, with "hundreds dead and many wounded" in Israel's fight with Hezbollah guerrillas.
Benedict also noted "a huge number" of homeless and displaced people and the destruction of homes and infrastructure. He said hatred and the desire for revenge appear to be growing.
