로마 카톨릭교회의 베네딕토 16세 교황은 23일을 중동 평화를 위해 기도하는 특별한 날로 선포했습니다.
베네딕토 교황은 또한 이스라엘과 레바논의 헤즈볼라 게릴라간 즉각적인 정전도 거듭 촉구했습니다. 교황은 이탈리아 알프스 산에 있는 자신의 여름 휴양지에서 수천명의 신도들을 향해 강론하는 가운데 그같이 촉구했습니다.
베네딕토 교황은 레바논의 주권과 이스라엘의 평화속에 살 권리를 지지하는 발언을 거듭 강조했습니다.
교황은 이스라엘 북부 지역내 주민들을 포함한 현지 주민들이 헤즈볼라의 로켓 공격을 피해 임시 거처에서 생활하도록 만들고 있으며 대다수의 레바논인들은 또다시 조국이 파괴되는 것을 목격하고 있다고 말했습니다.

Pope Benedict has declared today (Sunday) a special day of prayer for Middle East peace.
He also renewed an appeal for an immediate ceasefire between Israel and the Hezbollah guerrillas in Lebanon.
Benedict issued his plea as he spoke to thousands of pilgrims at his summer retreat in the Italian Alps.
The pontiff reiterated statements supporting Lebanon's sovereignty and Israel's right to live in peace.
He said those victims include those in northern Israel forced to live in shelters to avoid Hezbollah rocket attacks, and "the multitudes of Lebanese who once again are seeing their country destroyed."
