19일, 애쉬라프 콰지 유엔 이라크 특사는 이라크 내 모든 지도자들이 정부의 안보 법치 능력을 위협하는 “치솟는 폭력 양상”을 종식할 수 있도록 협조해 줄 것을 요청했습니다.
유엔은 5월과 6월에 이라크에서 거의 6,000명의 민간인들이 사망했다면서 이라크의 폭력 사태가 증가함을 시사했습니다.
한편, 미국은 미군과 이라크군이 알카에다 무장세력 용의자들을 수색하기 위해 이라크 북부의 두 도시에 진입했다고 말했습니다. 이번 수색 작전은 이 지역에서 이라크군 31명의 목숨을 앗아간 테러 공격이 있은 후에 행해지는 것입니다. 또한, 20일 미국은 미군 해병대 한 명이 알-안바 성에서 벌어진 전투에서 사망했다고 말했습니다.

Iraq's top Shi'ite Muslim cleric has called on Iraqis to unite and warned sectarian violence could destroy the country.
Grand Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani urged religious and political leaders, tribal chiefs and others to exert maximum efforts to stop the killing.
Wednesday, the United Nations envoy to Iraq (Ashraf Qazi) also called on Iraqi leaders to help end the "spiraling violence," which he said threatens the government's ability to bring security and the rule of law.
The U.N. says nearly six thousand civilians were killed in Iraq in May and June, indicating an increase in violence.
In other news, the U.S. says American and Iraqi soldiers have entered two cities in northern Iraq in search of suspected al-Qaeda militants.
The operation follows terror attacks in the region which killed 31 Iraqi soldiers.
Also today, the U.S. military says a Marine was killed in fighting in al-Anbar province.
