A subway train has derailed in the eastern Spanish city of Valencia, killing more than 30 people and injuring at least 10 others.
A regional government spokesman (Vicente Rambla) described the crash as an accident. He said at least one car derailed in a tunnel and overturned as the train was leaving a station (called Jesus) in downtown Valencia.
He said authorities have evacuated about 150 people from the station.
The crash occurred as hundreds of thousands of people were gathering in Valencia for the Roman Catholic Church's World Meeting of Families, to be held in the city Saturday and Sunday. Pope Benedict is to attend the gathering.
Reuter News agency quotes officials as indicating that speed was a factor in the accident.
