코피 아난 유엔 사무총장은 21일, 국제사회가 핵무기 확산을 막기 위한 노력을 배가할 것을 촉구했습니다.
아난 총장은 이날, 제네바에서 65개국이 참가한 가운데 열린 군축회의에서 이같이 말했습니다. 아난 총장은 대표들에게 비국가 실체들과 함께 많은 국가들이 핵무기를 보유하려고 집착하는 길로 몽유병자처럼 나아가고 있다고 지적했습니다.
아난 총장은 국제 군축노력이 핵확산금지조약에서 신뢰를 강화하고 회복시켜 줄 것이라고 덧붙였습니다.

United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan is calling on the international community to step up efforts to halt the spread of nuclear weapons.
Mr. Annan addressed the 65-nation Conference on Disarmament today (Wednesday) in Geneva. He told the delegates the world appears to be "sleepwalking" toward a path in which more nations, as well as non-state entities, are determined to possess nuclear weapons
The secretary-general says a major effort for international disarmament will strengthen and restore confidence in the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty.
Mr. Annan highlighted the current confrontations with North Korea and Iran over their nuclear programs. He urged Pyongyang not to make the situation "even more complicated," and called on Tehran to cooperate with the International Atomic Energy Agency to assure the world it is conducting a peaceful nuclear program.
