U.S. researchers have used embryonic stem cells to restore muscle movement in paralyzed mice, possibly signaling a major advance in treating people with spinal disease and injuries.

Naomi Kleitman of the U.S. National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke said Tuesday scientists used embryonic stem cells with a complex mixture of chemicals to spur the growth of the nerve tissues that control muscles.

Researchers at Johns Hopkins University say 11 of the 15 paralyzed mice in the experiment regained muscle strength and mobility.

Kleitman said the result is something researchers have been looking for for 30 years.

Scientists say much research remains to be done before this therapy could be used on humans.

The group plans to test the same therapy on pigs this summer.
