노르웨이는 19일 북극 부근의 산악지역에 철통 같은 경계망을 갖춘 대형 종자은행 건설을 시작할 계획입니다. 이 종자은행은 핵 전쟁과 자연재해 등 재난 발생으로 부터 식품 공급을 안전하게 확보하기 위해 설립되는 것입니다.
이 은행은 영하의 온도에 2백만개의 종자를 보존할 예정이며 궁극적으로는 지금까지 알려진 전세계의 모든 농작물을 보존 대상으로 하게 됩니다.
은행은 북극에서 약 1천 킬로미터 떨어진 노르웨이의 스발바드 섬에 소재한 산악지대의 한대 동토층에 1 미터 두깨의 벽을 세워 건설됩니다. 이 곳에 보관되는 종자는 지구온난화가 가속화돼도 수십년이 걸려야 해동됩니다.

Norway plans to begin construction today (Monday) of a huge top-security seed bank in a mountain near the North Pole that will safeguard food supplies from catastrophe ranging from nuclear war to natural disaster.
The global seed bank will preserve in subzero temperatures two million seeds, eventually representing all known varieties of the world's crops.
The bank is to be built with meter thick walls in permafrost in a mountainside on Norway's Svalbard Island about one thousand kilometers from the North Pole.
Even if global warming were to accelerate, it would take decades for the seeds to defrost behind the thick walls and airlocks.
The seed bank will act as back-up for other more vulnerable seed banks around the globe.
Norwegian Prime Minister Jens Stoltenberg today is expected to participate in a ceremony laying the first brick along with other leaders from Northern European countries.
