미국의 조지 부쉬 행정부는 북한이 장거리 미사일 시험발사 유예를 계속 유지하고 북한의 핵무기 개발 계획에 관한 6자 회담에 복귀할 것으로 기대한다고 말했습니다.
백악관의 토니 스노우 대변인은 18일 폭스 텔레비전 방송과 CBS-TV 방송에 출연해 북한 정부는 지난 1999년 장거리 미사일을 발사하지 않기로 동의했다고 말했습니다.
스노우 대변인은 미국이 북한의 미사일 시험발사 문제와 관련해 다른 정부들과 계속 접촉해 왔으며 유엔은 북한이 그 같은 공약을 지켜야한다는 점을 분명히 해왔다고 밝혔습니다.
북한이 새로운 장거리 미사일을 시험 발사할 태세로 있을지도 모른다는 보도로 이 지역의 긴장이 고조되고 있습니다.
일본의 아소 타로 외상은 18일 북한이 미사일을 시험 발사할 경우 일본은 유엔안전보장이사회 회의를 모색할 것이라고 말했습니다. 아소 외상은 일본 텔레비전 방송에 출연애 북한이 미사일을 시험발사해 그 미사일이 일본 영토에 떨어질 경우 일본은 이를 일종의 공격으로 간주할 것이라고 덧붙였습니다.
앞서 토마스 쉬퍼 일본 주재 미국 대사는 북한이 장거리 미사일 시험발사를 강행할 경우 미국은 북한에 대한 제재 조치 가능성을 고려할 것이라고 말했습니다.
북한의 장거리 미사일 시험발사 준비 태세에 관한 보도는 북한의 핵무기 개발 계획을 중단시키기 위한 6자 회담이 계속 교착 상태에 빠져 있는 가운데 나왔습니다.
지난해 북한은 핵무기를 보유하고 있다고 선언하고 지난 11월 이후 북한에 대한 미국의 정책들이 적대적이라면서 6자 회담에 복귀하기를 계속 거부하고 있습니다.

The Bush administration says it expects North Korea to maintain a moratorium on long-range missile testing and to return to six-party talks on its nuclear program.
In interviews (on the Fox and CBS networks) today (Sunday), White House spokesman Tony Snow said the North Korean government agreed in 1999 to not fire long-range missiles. He said Washington has been in contact with other governments and the United Nations to make it clear the North Koreans must honor that commitment.
Reports that North Korea may be preparing for a new missile test have increased tension in the region. Japanese Foreign Minister Taro Aso says (today/Sunday) his government would seek a meeting of the U.N. Security Council if North Korea tests a missile.
Aso told Japanese television that if Pyongyang fires a missile and it drops on Japan, Tokyo will regard it as an attack.
Earlier, the U.S. ambassador to Japan, Thomas Schieffer, said the United States would consider possible sanctions against North Korea if a test was carried out.
The reports of test preparations came as the six-party talks (between the U.S., China, Russia, Japan and the two Koreas) aimed at dismantling Pyongyang's nuclear weapons program remain stalled.
Last year North Korea declared it had nuclear weapons and since November has boycotted the talks, citing what it has called hostile American policies.
