A Nigerian militant group says it will release five South Korean contractors kidnapped Wednesday from an offshore natural gas plant.

The Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta, or MEND, says it will free the South Koreans today (Thursday) following an appeal from a jailed militant leader (Mujahid Dokubo-Asari).

But, the insurgent group warned the South Koreans' employers and other foreign companies to leave the Niger Delta or face more drastic action in the future.

MEND had demanded Nigerian authorities release the jailed militant, Mujahid Dokubo-Asari, in exchange for the hostages. Dokubo-Asari is on trial for treason, and was denied bail Tuesday by a Nigerian court.

The five South Koreans were abducted from a gas facility near the oil hub of Port Harcourt in southern Nigerian in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

MEND says its fighters killed several Nigerian soldiers during the raid, and says one of its own fighters was also killed.
