이라크 테러 지도자 아부 무삽 알-자르카위가 미군과 이라크군의 합동 공습작전에서 사망했습니다. 이라크의 누리 알-말리키 총리는 8일, 이라크 주둔 미군 사령관인 조지 케이시 장군과 잘마이 칼리자드 이라크 주둔 미국대사와 합동으로 기자회견을 갖고 자르카위가 사망했다고 발표했습니다.
알-말리키 총리는 자르카위의 부하 대원 일곱명 역시 바그다드 동북부 바쿠바 인근에 있는 안전가옥에 은신중 숨졌다고 말했습니다.
케이시 장군은 자르카위가 조직내 고위 대원들에 의해 배신당했다며, 사체의 지문검사와 몸의 상처, 인상착의 등을 통해 자르캬위의 신원을 확인했다고 말했습니다.
요르단 태생의 자르카위는 지난 3년동안 이라크에서 거의 매일 자살폭탄 테러를 벌여온 ‘알카에다’의 이라크 지도자로, 한국의 김선일 씨 등 외국인 인질납치와 참수 등을 주도한 것으로 알려졌습니다.
미국은 자르카위의 체포에 2천5백만 달러의 보상금을 내걸었었으나, 지금까지 자르카위의 행방은 묘연했었습니다.

A joint military operation by U.S. and Iraqi forces has killed terrorist leader Abu Musab al-
Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki announced Zarqawi's death at a news conference today (Thursday), together with the U.S. military commander in Iraq, General George Casey, and U.S. Ambassador Zalmay Khalilzad.
The prime minister says seven of Zarqawi's associates died with him in a "safe house" near Baquba, northeast of the capital.
General Casey says Zarqawi was betrayed by senior members of his own organization, which carried out almost daily suicide bombings and other attacks over the past three years. The general says Zarqawi's identity was confirmed from fingerprints, scars and "facial recognition."
Al-Qaida in Iraq confirmed Zarqawi's death in a message posted on the Internet saying he had been "martyred."
Jordanian-born Zarqawi took an active role in video and Internet statements by his terrorist group, and he was said to have taken part personally in beheadings of hostages and other killings. He had remained at large until now despite the U.S. offer of a 25-million-dollar reward for his capture.
