미국의 조지 부쉬 대통령은 1일, 민감한 핵활동을 중단하고 핵분쟁 해결에 관한 협상을 열자는 미국 제의에 대한 수용 여부는 이제 이란의 몫이라고 말했습니다.
부쉬 대통령은 이날 백악관에서 기자들에게 만약 이란이 미국의 제의를 거부한다면 세계는 유엔안전보장이사회를 통해 제재조치를 취하게 될 것이라고 말했습니다.
부쉬 대통령의 이같은 발언은 미국과 영국, 중국, 러시아, 프랑스, 독일 등 6개국 외무장관들이 오스트리아 빈에서 이란 핵협상안에 관해 논의하고 있는 가운데 나왔습니다.
미국의 콘돌리자 라이스 국무장관 등 6개국 외무장관들은 이란이 민감한 핵활동을 중단할 경우, 일괄 유인책을 제공하고, 만약 불응할 경우, 제재를 가하는 방안에 관해 최종 조율을 벌이고 있습니다.
이에 앞서 지난 31일에 라이스 장관은, 미국은 이란이 우라늄 농축과 재처리 활동을 중단할 경우, 유럽연합이 이란과 벌이고 있는 핵협상에 직접 참여하겠다고 밝힌 바 있습니다.
테헤란에서 이란의 마누셰르 모타키 외무장관은 회담의 전제조건을 거부하고, 이란은 농축 우라늄에 대한 권리를 포기하지 않을 것이라고 밝혔습니다.

President Bush says it is now up to Iran to decide whether it will suspend sensitive nuclear activities and accept a U.S. offer to hold talks on resolving the dispute.
Mr. Bush told reporters at the White House today (Thursday) that if Iran rejects the U.S. offer, the world will act together through the United Nations Security Council.
Mr. Bush's remarks come as foreign ministers of world powers are meeting in Vienna to discuss how to resolve the dispute over Iran's nuclear program.
U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and her counterparts from Britain, Germany, France, Russia and China are finalizing a package of incentives for Iran if it gives up sensitive nuclear activities - and penalties if it does not.
On Wednesday, Rice said the U.S. is prepared to join European talks with Iran if Tehran suspends its uranium enrichment and reprocessing activities.
In Tehran, Iranian Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki rejected the conditions for the talks, saying his country will not give up its right to enrich uranium.
