앞서 구스마오 대통령은 질서회복을 위한 비상조처를 발표했습니다. 구스마오 대통령은 국방과 내무 장관을 해임하고 자신이 동티모르의 국방과 국가안보 문제를 완전히 책임질 것이라고 말했습니다.
그러나 마리 알카티리 총리는 구스마오 대통령이 책임을 혼자 떠맡고 있는 것은 아니라고 말했습니다. 동티모르에서는 전직 군인들과 정부군 간의 전투 와중에 지금까지 최소한 27명이 사망하고 주민 수천여명이 피신했습니다.

East Timor's capital appears calmer today (Wednesday) following President Xanana Gusmao's announcement that he has assumed responsibility for the country's security.
Witnesses say sporadic gunfire can still be heard in Dili, but no major violence has been reported. They say a clash broke out between youths near the airport, but foreign troops quickly intervened.
On Tuesday, Mr. Gusmao announced emergency measures aimed at restoring order. He dismissed his defense and interior ministers, and said he was taking full control of the nation's defense and national security affairs.
But, Prime Minister Mari Alkatiri denied today (Thursday) that the president is taking sole responsibility.
Mr. Alkatiri told the Australian Broadcasting Corporation that Mr. Gusmao's statement was misinterpreted. He was quoted as saying "defense and security is still part of the government, and I am head of the government."
Mr. Alkatiri has come under fire for his handling of a military mutiny that led to the current violence.
The fighting started between former troops and government forces, and has since evolved into battles between rival gangs.
The violence has killed at least 27 people and displaced thousands more.
