Afghan officials say a U.S.-led coalition aircraft has bombed Taleban militants meeting in southern Afghanistan.

Officials say the air strike today (Monday) killed several Taleban leaders in the southern province of Helmand.

Provincial deputy governor, Amir Mohammad Akhundzada, said Taleban fighters and commanders were gathered for a morning meeting when the bombardment took place. He said about 50 insurgents were killed.

Monday's strike was the latest in a series of attacks and clashes between coalition forces and insurgents.

On Friday, coalition forces killed five militants, including senior Taleban leaders, in a strike on an insurgent training camp in the province.

Military officials say around 400 people, mostly insurgents, have been killed since mid-May.

At least four people died in Afghanistan's capital today (Monday), in a deadly traffic accident involving U.S. troops and in rioting and gunfire that erupted afterwards.

Reports from Kabul tell of widespread looting. Many shops were set afire in an outburst of public anger following a deadly collision between an American military convoy and Afghan civilian vehicles.

Witnesses said much of the gunfire at the scene of the original incident, in a crowded (northern) area of Kabul, came from Afghan security forces, after protesters set fire to police vehicles began stoning U.S. troops. The rioting spread quickly, and gunfire was heard in several parts of the capital, including a diplomatic quarter near the U.S. Embassy.

Crowds of angry Afghans marched toward President Hamid Karzai's palace. Many shouted anti-American slogans and denounced Mr. Karzai.
