버마 군사정부는 버마 민주화 야당 지도자 아웅산 수 지 여사를 석방하라는 국제사회의 촉구에도 불구하고 27일로 만료예정이던 수 지 여사에 대한 가택연금을 또 연장했습니다.
버마 경찰은 이에 앞서 26일, 수 지 여사의 랑군 자택을 방문했으나 그 목적이 무엇인지 알려지지 않고 있습니다. 버마 경찰은 6개월 전에도 수 지 여사 자택을 방문해 수 지 여사에 대한 가택연금이 연장됐음을 통보한 바 있습니다.
버마가 회원국으로 가입해 있는 동남아국가연합, 아세안 회원국의 고위 외교관들은 아웅산 수 지 여사에 대한 가택연금 연장결정에 실망을 나타내고 있습니다. 버마의 야당, 민족민주동맹, NLD의 당수로 민주화 운동에 앞장서 추진해온 수 지 여사는 지난 16년에 걸쳐 10년 동안 가택연금과 구금을 겪어왔습니다.

Burma's military government has extended the house arrest of opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi for another year, despite international calls for her release.
Her latest term of house arrest had been due to expire today (Saturday).
On Friday, Burmese police visited the Rangoon home of the pro-democracy leader, just hours after U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan made an appeal for her release.
Six months ago, Rangoon police made a similar visit to the residence to inform her that her sentence had been extended.
Aung San Suu Kyi, leader of the opposition National League for Democracy, has been in detention for 10 of the past 16 years. She was most recently taken into custody in May 2003, after her motorcade was attacked by a pro-junta mob as she was making a political tour of northern Burma.
