Police in Nigeria say as many as 200 people have been killed in a pipeline explosion near the business capital of Lagos. Authorities say the explosion today (Friday) was an accident. They believe vandals were siphoning oil from the pipeline when a spark triggered the blast. They say flames quickly ignited more than 500 oil cans nearby.

A Red Cross official in Nigeria (Abiodun Orebiyi) says bodies were burned beyond recognition at the site of the explosion in the waterside village of Ilado. He adds no survivors have been found.

Videotaped images from the scene showed the village's beach littered with human bones and charred corpses.

A Lagos-based journalist (Paul Okolo) tells VOA that it is common for people to siphon fuel from burst or tapped pipes.
