부쉬 대통령은 4일 늦게 워싱턴에서 열린 한 회의에서 이란 정부가 국민을 억압하고 테러 분자들을 후원하며 그 지역을 불안정하게 만들고 이스라엘을 위협하고 있다고 비난하고, 이러한 이유들로, 미국과 그 유럽 동맹국들, 그리고 러시아와 중국은 이란이 핵 무기를 획득하는 수단들을 거부한다는 목표를 갖고 있다고 설명했습니다.
부쉬 대통령의 이같은 발언은, 유엔 안전 보장 이사회의 5개 상임 이사국이 이란 핵 계획에 관한 결의안 초안을 논의하기위해 첫 회담을 가진 지 몇시간 뒤에 나왔습니다.

President Bush has accused Iran of defying the world with its ambitions for nuclear weapons.
At a conference (of the American Jewish Committee, a Jewish advocacy group) in Washington late Thursday, Mr. Bush accused Tehran of repressing its citizens, sponsoring terrorists, destabilizing the region and threatening Israel.
He said for those reasons, the United States, its European allies, Russia and China have a goal to deny Iran the means of acquiring an atomic weapon.
Mr. Bush's comments came hours after the five permanent members of the U.N. Security Council (the United States, Britain, France, Russia and China) held a first round of talks on a draft resolution on Iran's nuclear program.
The resolution (introduced by Britain and France and strongly backed by Washington) does not threaten economic sanctions, but invokes (Chapter Seven) a section of the U.N. charter which can be used to authorize sanctions and military force as a last resort.
Iran's U.N. envoy (Javad Zarif) says the resolution is aimed at provoking a crisis. He says Iran wants a negotiated solution to the standoff.
