뉴욕 월드 트레이드 센터를 붕괴시킨 9.11 테러로 살해된 67명의 영국인 희생자 가족 친척들은 상당수가 무싸위의 종신징역을 반겼으나, 알 카에다 지도자 오사마 빈 라덴이 아직 붙잡히지 않은데 대해서는 실망하고 있습니다.
아들 케빈을 희생당한 패트리시아 빙글리 여인은 무싸위에 대한 이 평결이 자신의 상처를 치유하는데 도움이 되느냐는 영국 텔레비전 방송의 질문에 이렇게 대답했습니다.
“아닙니다. 빈 라덴이 붙잡히기를 근 5년동안이나 기다려왔고 지금도 여전히 기다리고 있기 때문에, 조금도 종결된게 아닙니다. 저에게는 빈 라덴이 붙잡히는 게 종결이 될것입니다. 그러나, 오늘 당장에는 빈 라덴의 하수인들중 한명이 이제 재판을 받아 종신 징역형을 선고 받았다는데에 얼마간 만족합니다.”
무싸위에 대한 이같은 평결은 또한 지난 1990년대 무싸위가 런던에서 보내던 때를 다시 되살려 주고 있습니다.
런던 남부에 소재한 “브릭스톤” 사원의 원장인 압둘 하크 베이커씨는 자신이 선동적인 청년 무싸위와 대결했던 것을 상기합니다.
“그는 나에게 와서 ‘다음 번 지하드 성전장소는 어디냐”를 끈질기게 물고 늘어지면서 대결하려 했습니다. 내가 정말 모른다고 말하자, 그는 매우 좌절하고 나에게 화를 냈습니다.”
영국 BBC 방송의 치안 담당 기자인 고돈 카레라씨는 무싸위가 급진적인 회교 설교사들의 영향하에 완전히 떨어져, 알 카에다 테러 분자들이 된 극단주의자들의 핵심 그룹에 가담하게 됐다고 말합니다.
“해외에서 와서 런던에서 한때를 보낸 사람이 있습니다. 그는, 방랑자 비슷하게 런던에 나타났으며 특별히 과격한 사람은 아니었습니다. 그러나 1990년 대에 런던에서 사람들과 접촉하면서 그는 급진주의자가 됐고 알 카에다 훈련소로 가서 테러 음모들에 가담하게 됐습니다.”
영국 경찰은 9.11 사태이후 테러 용의자들에 대해 더욱 공격적으로 나서왔으나, 무싸위와 같이 알 카에다의 이름으로 만행을 자행하려 기다리고 있는 또 다른 인물들이 없는 지 확신을 하질 못하고 있다고 카레라씨는 말하고 있습니다.

Relatives of the British victims of the September 11, 2001, attacks in New York are welcoming the life sentence handed down to confessed al-Qaida terrorist Zacarias Moussaoui.
Sixty-seven Britons were killed in the collapse of the World Trade Center towers in New York City and many of their relatives say they are pleased Moussaoui will be jailed for life, but they are upset al-Qaida leader Osama Bin Laden remains at large.
Patricia Bingley, whose son Kevin was killed, was asked by British television if the verdict helps heal her loss.
"No, there isn't any closure," she said, "because for nearly five years I've waited for Bin Laden to be captured and I'm still waiting. That would be closure for me. But today, it has given me some satisfaction to know that one of his conspirators has now been brought to trial and has been sentenced to a life imprisonment."
The Moussaoui verdict also has revived recollections of his time in London in the 1990's.
The chairman of the Brixton mosque in south London, Abdul Haqq Baker, recalls confrontations he had with an agitated young Moussaoui.
"He would come and confront me and persisting in asking me: 'Where is the next jihad? Where is the next jihad?' And, when I told him I didn't actually know, he would become very frustrated and angry with me," Baker said.
The security correspondent for the British Broadcasting Corporation, Gordon Carrera, says Moussaoui fell under the influence of radical Muslim preachers and joined a cadre of extremists who became al-Qaida terrorists.
"Here is another figure who came through London. Came from abroad. Spent time in London," explained Carrera. "Appears to have come here as a bit of drifter, but not a particularly radical figure. But through contact with people in London in the '90s became radicalized, went to al-Qaida training camps and becomes part of terrorist plots."
British police have been more aggressive against suspected terrorists since the 2001 attacks, but Carrera says they cannot be certain there are no other figures like Moussaoui, awaiting their turn to commit an atrocity in the name of al-Qaida.
