The International Atomic Energy Agency says Iran has failed to meet a United Nations Security Council deadline for suspending uranium enrichment.
In a report delivered to the U.N. Security Council today (Friday), the I.A.E.A. called for "additional transparency measures" with Iran's nuclear program so it can verify the "scope and nature" of Iran's enrichment program.
The agency said the gaps in its knowledge of the nuclear program continue to be a "matter of concern."
At the White House, President Bush said the I.A.E.A. report is an important statement, and the world is united in its concern about Iran's nuclear activities.
At the U.N., U.S. Ambassador John Bolton described Iran's activities as a threat to international peace and security. He again said the United States is seeking a legally binding U.N. resolution to demand that Iran halt the enrichment.
But permanent U.N. Security Council members China and Russia oppose sanctions against Iran.
Iran remains defiant about its nuclear program, which it says is for peaceful purposes. The United States accuses Tehran of seeking nuclear weapons.
