A top U.S. official has called on Russia to halt any arms sales to Iran, as part of Washington's efforts to isolate Tehran because of its controversial nuclear program.
Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs Nicholas Burns said in Washington Friday that Iran is in violation of international nuclear agreements. He said it is time for countries to use their leverage to pressure Iran into compliance.
Under Secretary of State for Arms Control Robert Joseph described the Iran nuclear situation as likely the "greatest strategic threat" facing the United States and the international community.
Russia continues to resist calls for sanctions against Iran. Moscow says it will not agree to such a move until it sees hard evidence that Tehran's nuclear program is not for peaceful purposes.
