Senior Japanese and South Korean officials say they have made little progress in their efforts to settle a dispute over an island chain claimed by both nations.

Japan's vice foreign minister, Shotaro Yachi, and his South Korean counterpart, Yu Myung-hwan, held an initial 90-minute meeting in Seoul late today (Friday). Officials say each side restated its position on the issue and have agreed to keep meeting.

The controversy surrounds a group of rocky islands in the Sea of Japan, known as Dokdo in South Korea and Takeshima in Japan. The area is believed to be rich in undeveloped energy resources.

Tokyo this week sent ships to survey the area. South Korea, in turn, sent 20 coast guard vessels to meet them, saying they would not rule out a physical confrontation. Japan says it will delay the survey while negotiations are under way.
