페루는 9일 알레한드로 톨레도 대통령의 뒤를 이을 신임 대통령과 새로운 의회 선출을 위한 투표를 실시합니다.
투표일을 이틀 앞두고 공개된 최종 여론조사에서는 3명의 주요 대통령 후보들이 각축전을 벌이는 것으로 나타났습니다.
이들 가운데는 군 출신으로 선거전 초기에 선두를 달린 올란타 후말라 후보가 포함돼 있으며, 그는 페루에 투자하는 외국기업들에 대한 혜택을 취소하겠다는 공약을 내걸고 있습니다. 후말라 후보는 우고 차베스 베네수엘라 대통령으로 부터 공개적인 지지를 얻었고 이 때문에 톨레도 대통령은 차베스 대통령을 비판했습니다.
이밖에 중소기업 지원을 공약으로 내세운 중도우파 성향의 변호사인 로우르데스 플로레스 후보는 당선될 경우 페루의 첫 여성 대통령이 됩니다.

Peruvians go to the polls today (Sunday) to elect a successor to President Alejandro Toledo and a new Congress.
Final opinion polls (published two days before election day) show the three main presidential contenders in a virtual tie.
They include leftist candidate Ollanta Humala, a former soldier who took an early lead in the race, and promised to revoke the benefits given to foreign business investing in Peru. Humala received an open endorsement from Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez, prompting Mr. Toledo to criticize the Venezuelan leader.
Center-right lawyer Lourdes Flores is another leading candidate. She is bidding to become Peru's first female president, and has pledged to help small businesses.
