Authorities in Bahrain say the boat that capsized Thursday night, killing 57 people, was only licensed for use as a floating restaurant, not for passenger cruises.
Officials in Manama say the traditional wooden boat was overloaded beyond its capacity of 100 when it sank about two kilometers off Bahrain's coast. They say they believe 126 people were on the vessel when it completely flipped over - throwing some passengers into the water and trapping others inside the sinking craft.
Prosecutors say they have detained the captain, who was not qualified to pilot the boat, for questioning.
