Opinion polls published in Israel today (Monday) ahead of Tuesday's general election show the centrist Kadima party of interim Prime Minister Ehud Olmert has lost some support, but retains a commanding lead.
Surveys by four Israeli newspapers (Ha'aretz, Yediot Ahronot, Maariv & Jerusalem Post) indicate Kadima is likely to win between 33 and 36 seats, making it the largest party in the 120-member Israeli parliament.
The polls give second place to Israel's center-left Labor Party, which is projected to win between 17 and 21 seats. The hawkish Likud Party is a distant third in the surveys with a projection of 13 to 15 seats.
The right-wing Yisrael Beitenu party, popular with immigrants from the former Soviet Union, is expected to make a strong showing, and polls suggest it could challenge Likud for third place.
All the opinion polls indicate there are a substantial number of undecided voters. Israeli police have stepped up security throughout the country to stop possible attacks by Palestinian militants.
