콘돌리자 라이스 미 국무장관은, 이란에게 우라늄 농축활동을 중단하라고 촉구하는 유엔안전보장 이사회의 성명이 더 이상 지연돼서는 안된다고 강조했습니다.
라이스 장관은 23일, 이란의 핵확산 금지조약 이행과 핵계획에 관한 국제사회의 우려를 가라앉히도록 요구하는 데 있어서 국제사회가 단결돼있다는 것을 보여주기위해서는 낭비할 시간이 없다고 말했습니다.
라이스 장관은 이란이 국제원자력 기구에게 18년 동안 거짓말을 하고 있다고 비난했습니다. 그는 테헤란 정부가 민간용 핵 계획을 가질수는 있지만 그것은 우라늄 농축을 통한 것이 아니어야 하고 자국 영토내에서 가공을 하지 않는 것이어야 한다고 덧붙였습니다.
유엔 안보리 5개 상임 이사국과 독일은 이란에 우라늄 농축을 중단하고 국제 기준을 따르도록 압박을 가하는 방법에 합의하는데 실패했습니다. . 러시아와이란에 대한 제재를 불러올 수도 있다는 점과 이 문제에 관한 국제 원자력 기구의 권한을 없앨수 있다는 점을 이유로 중국은 서방측의 성명 초안에 반대했습니다.

U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice says there should be no further delay on a U.N. Security Council statement calling on Iran to halt uranium enrichment activities.
Rice said Thursday there is no time for delay in showing that the world community is united in demanding that Iran fulfill its Non-Proliferation Treaty obligations and allay concerns about its nuclear program.
She accused Iran of lying to the International Atomic Energy Agency for 18 years. She added Tehran can have a civilian nuclear program but not one with uranium enrichment and reprocessing capabilities on its own soil.
The five permanent members of the Security Council plus Germany have failed to agree on how to press Iran to suspend uranium enrichment activities and comply with international standards.
Russia and China have opposed a Western draft statement on the grounds it could lead to sanctions against Iran and remove the issue from the purview of the I.A.E.A.
