A U.S. anti-war organization says it was monitored by federal agents solely because of its stance against the war in Iraq. The Pittsburgh-based group (the Thomas Merton Center for Peace and Justice) Tuesday released several documents related to an FBI investigation of its activities.
Among the documents was a memo written in November 2002 describing the center as "a left-wing organization" that advocates pacifism. The memo also notes that an FBI agent photographed members handing out anti-war leaflets. An FBI spokesman acknowledges the agency photographed the activity, but says it was part of an investigation of one person.
The documents were obtained by the American Civil Liberties Union under a special law (the Freedom of Information Act) that grants individuals or groups access to government documents. The A.C.L.U. has accused the Bush administration of spying on domestic groups who have spoken out in opposition of the U.S.-led war in Iraq.
