일본 이와쿠니 시 유권자들은 현지 미군 기지를 확대하려는 정부의 계획을 압도적인 표차로 거부했습니다.
구속력이 없는 12일의 주민투표 공식 결과에서, 4만 3천명의 시민들이 그같은 제안에 반대했고, 찬성은 약 5천여 명에 불과했습니다.
하지만 미군 기지 이전 계획에 대한 최종 결정권은 일본중앙 정부가 갖고 있습니다. 정부 계획에 따르면, 도쿄 인근의 아쓰키 기지에서 일본 서부 이와쿠니 시로 항공모함 탑재기 57대와 천6백명의 미군 요원들을 이전하도록 돼 있습니다.
이와쿠니에는 이미 57대의 군용기와 3천명 이상의 미 해병대원들이 배치돼 있습니다.

Voters in the Japanese city of Iwakuni have overwhelmingly rejected a government plan that would enlarge the U.S. military base there.
Official results from Sunday's non-binding referendum show 43 thousand city residents are against the proposal and just over five-thousand are in favor.
Japan's central government still has the final say in the relocation plan.
Under the plan, 57 carrier-based jets and about 16-hundred U.S. military personnel would be transferred to Iwakuni, in western Japan, from Atsugu naval base near Tokyo.
Iwakuni is already home to 57 U.S. military aircraft and more than three thousand Marines.
