The White House says Russian President Vladimir Putin telephoned President Bush Saturday to discuss Russia's recent meetings with the Palestinian militant group, Hamas, and Iran's top nuclear negotiator.
A White House spokesman (Scott McClellan) said Saturday Mr. Bush emphasized the need for Hamas to recognize the state of Israel and renounce violence - steps Hamas refused to take in discussions with Russia Friday and Saturday.
U.S. and Russian officials also say Mr. Bush and Mr. Putin discussed Russia's continuing conversations with Iran on its nuclear ambitions.
Earlier Saturday, the leader of the Hamas delegation currently visiting Russia praised Moscow for hosting the talks, saying Russia can be a major force in promoting stability in the Middle East.
