Iran's Foreign Minister says he would welcome any suitable proposal from the International Atomic Energy Agency that would allow Tehran to pursue limited nuclear enrichment activities.
Manouchehr Mottaki's comments today (Saturday) come days after the French news agency reported that unnamed diplomats close to U.N. atomic chief Mohamed ElBaradei had suggested that such a proposal was possible. The I.A.E.A. has not made any public comments about such plans, and is the body that reported Iran to the U.N. Security Council over suspicions it is trying to make atomic weapons.
Friday, the Iranian Embassy in Paris released a statement saying Iran might consider ratifying an accord that would reopen nuclear facilities to United Nations inspectors -- if certain guarantees are met. In recent days, French Foreign Minister Philippe Douste-Blazy accused Tehran of secretly building nuclear weapons. Iran's chief nuclear negotiator Ali Larijani rejected that charge as untruthful propaganda.
