부시 미국 대통령과 코피 아난 유엔 사무총장이 13일 백악관에서 만나 내전으로 피폐화된 수단 다르푸르 지역의 유엔 평화 유지군 창설과 관련한 준비 방안에 대해 논의했습니다.
아난 총장은 유엔 평화 유지군 창설이 아직 준비 단계에 있기 때문에 자신은 미국에 특별한 병력이나 장비를 요구하지 않았다고 말했습니다.
아난 총장은 그러나 인도주의 요원들을 보호하기 위해 다르푸르내 치안이 강화되야 한다는데 부시 대통령과 인식을 같이했다고 말했습니다.
유엔 안보리는 앞서 현 7천명의 아프리카 평화 유지군을 대체하는 다르푸르 유엔 평화 유지군 창설을 승인했습니다.

President Bush and United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan discussed the proposed U.N. peacekeeping force for Sudan's war-torn Darfur region at the White House today (Monday).
Mr. Annan told reporters that he did not make a specific request for troops or equipment because the force is still in the planning stages.
But he said he and the president agree that an effective security presence is needed in Darfur to protect humanitarian workers.
The Security Council has approved the creation of a Darfur peacekeeping force to replace the current African Union force of seven thousand.
Last week, Mr. Annan said the U.N. force will have to be bigger and better equipped, which, he said, will require the help of powerful countries, including the United States.
Fighting between rebel and government forces in Darfur has killed tens of thousands of people and displaced some two million others.
