홍해에서 침몰한 이집트 여객선은 선체에서 화재가 났는데도 불구하고 운항을 계속했다고 생존자들이 밝혔습니다.
생존자들은 2일 저녁 사우디아라비아의 두바이 항을 출발한 지 두 시간 만에 여객선에 화재가 발생했지만 승무원들은 두바이로 돌아가지 않았다면서, 여객선이 3일 새벽 기울기 시작하면서 악천후 속에 급격히 가라앉았다고 말했습니다.
이들은 또 건조한 지 35년 된 이 여객선에 구명정이 충분하지 않았다고 말했습니다.
당국은 화재가 여객선의 침몰을 초래했는지 분명하지 않다고 밝히고 있는 가운데 호스니 무라바크 이집트 대통령은 수사를 지시했습니다.
한편 구조대는 여객선에 탑승했던 1천4백여 승객 중 4백여 명의 생존자를 발견하고 2백여 구의 시신을 수습했습니다. 나머지는 실종상태에 있지만 차가운 바다에서 추가 생존자가 발견될 가능성은 희박하다고 당국은 밝혔습니다.

Survivors of an Egyptian ferry that sank in the Red Sea are blaming the crew for continuing the voyage even after a fire broke out on board.
The survivors say the vessel did not turn back when the blaze erupted about two hours after the ship left the Saudi port of Dubah late Thursday. They said the ferry began to list and went down quickly in bad weather early Friday.
Witnesses also said the 35-year-old ferry (Al-Salam Boccaccio 98) did not have enough lifeboats.
Authorities say it is not clear if the fire caused the ship to sink. Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak has ordered an investigation.
Rescue teams have found about 400 survivors and recovered nearly 200 bodies. The rest of the more than 14 hundred mainly Egyptian passengers and crew are missing. Authorities say hope is fading of finding more survivors in the chilly waters.
