유엔 안전보장이사회는 하마스가 이끄는 새 팔레스타인 정부는 이스라엘을 인정하고 협상을 통해 중동분쟁을 해결할 것을 다짐해야 한다고 말했습니다.
안보리의 이같은 입장표명은 지난 25일 실시된 팔레스타인 선거에서 과격 이슬람 단체인 하마스가 예상을 깨고 승리한 이후 처음 나온 것입니다. 안보리 의장인 존 볼튼 유엔주재 미국대사는 유엔 안보리는 이스라엘과 공존하는 팔레스타인 독립국가 건설을 계속 지지한다고 밝혔습니다.
볼튼 대사는 또 팔레스타인 당국이 이른바 평화를 위한 로드맵 이행약속을 거듭 확인한 것을 환영하면서 향후 팔레스타인 정부의 모든 구성원들은 이같은 약속을 확인해야 한다고 말했습니다.
볼튼 대사는 이스라엘의 정착촌 확장사업은 중단돼야 한다면서 요르단강 서안을 가로막는 분리장벽에 대해 우려를 나타냈습니다.

The U.N. Security Council says any new Hamas-led Palestinian government must recognize Israel and commit itself to a negotiated settlement of the Mideast conflict.
The Council commented Friday for the first time on the militant Islamic group's surprise victory in the January 25th Palestinian elections.
U.S. Ambassador John Bolton, the Council president for February, said the U.N. body remains committed to the goal of an independent Palestinian state living alongside Israel.
Bolton welcomed the Palestinian Authority's commitment to the so-called "roadmap" to peace. But he added that all members of a future Palestinian government must share that commitment.
Bolton also called for a halt to Israeli settlement expansion and expressed concern about its separation barrier that cuts into the West Bank.
