터키계 키프러스인들이 지배하고 있는 키프러스 북부에서 치명적인 H5N1 조류 독감 바이러스가 탐지됐다고 유럽위원회가 밝혔습니다. 위원회는 29일 죽은 새에게서 이 바이러스가 확인됐다고 말했습니다.
키프러스는 조류독감으로 의심되는 사례들이 보고된 이후 북부지역의 가금류를 폐기처분하는 한편 차량들에 대한 방역작업을 벌여왔습니다.
한편 홍콩 당국은 중국 본토와의 국경 부근에서 H5N1 바이러스에 양성 반응을 보이는 죽은 새를 또 한마리 발견했다고 말했습니다. 홍콩에서는 이달 초에도 중국과의 국경 부근에서 발견된 새가 치명적인 H5N1 조류독감 바이러스에 양성반응을 보인 바 있습니다.
동아시아와 터키에서는 2003년 이래 조류독감으로 최소한 81명이 사망했습니다.

The European Commission say the deadly H5N1 strain of avian flu has been detected in Turkish Cypriot-controlled northern Cyprus.
The commission reports today (Sunday) that the strain was confirmed in a dead bird. Last week, Cyprus began culling free-roaming poultry and disinfecting vehicles coming from the north after suspected bird flu cases were reported there.
Meanwhile, Hong Kong says it has found another dead bird that tested positive for the H5N1 strain. Officials say the infected bird was found near the border with mainland China.
Hong Kong had gone a year without reporting any cases of H5N1 in birds until earlier this month when another bird found near mainland China tested positive.
Bird flu has killed at least 81 people in East Asia and Turkey since 2003.
