The Islamic militant group Hamas is preparing to form the next Palestinian government after its sweeping victory in Wednesday's parliamentary elections. A senior Hamas leader (Ismail Haniyeh) says he has asked Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas to meet within two days to discuss formation of the next government.
Mr. Abbas confirmed today (Friday) he will ask the majority party -- Hamas -- to form the government. In Washington, a State Department spokesman said the United States will review all aspects of its aid program to the Palestinians if Hamas enters the government.
He said the United States does not provide money to "terrorist organizations." Israel says it will not negotiate with a Hamas-led government. Hamas has called for the destruction of the Jewish state. In Gaza City late today (Friday), thousands of Fatah members -- angry over the ruling party's defeat -- demonstrated to demand the resignation of corrupt officials. Some protesters fired guns in the air and set fire to vehicles.
