부쉬 대통령은 그 밖에 미국인은 세계에 어느 곳에서나 사람을 고문하지 않을 것이라고 말했습니다.
한편, 죠지 부쉬 미국 대통령은 팔레스타인의 이슬람 과격단체, 하마스에게 평화의 동반자가 되기를 원한다면 이스라엘 파멸을 추구하는 정강을 포기해야만 한다고 말했습니다.
부쉬 대통령은 백악관 기자회견에서 하마스가 무장단체를 갖고 있는 한 평화과정의 일원이 될 수는 없을 것으로 생각한다고 강조하며 이같이 말했습니다.
부쉬 대통령은 팔레스타인 총선거에서 하마스가 승리한 것은 팔레스타인 지도자들에 대한 개혁 필요성을 일깨워주는 경고라고 말했습니다. 부쉬 대통령은 그러나 마흐무드 압바스 팔레스타인 자치수반이 현직에 머물러 있기를 희망한다고 말했습니다.

President Bush continues to defend his policy on domestic surveillance, insisting the controversial program is legal and necessary.
Speaking to reporters at the White House today (Thursday), the president said intelligence agencies must monitor communications to prevent another terrorist attack. He added the program is designed to protect Americans' civil liberties.
Mr. Bush authorized the government to monitor, without a court order, phone calls and e-mail between Americans and suspected terrorists abroad. Democratic and some Republican lawmakers have questioned the legality of the program.
Mr. Bush also said that recent legislation outlawing torture would not be circumvented. His administration had initially opposed the new law, enacted after the US was accused of condoning torture in its pursuit of terrorists. Mr. Bush said no American would be allowed to torture anyone, anywhere in the world.
The president also addressed allegations that North Korea has been counterfeiting US currency. He said he must act to protect American interests and that the issue is non-negotiable, an apparent attempt to separate the issue from six-party talks on Pyongyang's nuclear program.
Mr. Bush also dismissed questions about photographs of him with disgraced Washington lobbyist Jack Abramoff, saying he did not know the man.
President Bush says the Islamic militant group Hamas must renounce its platform calling for the destruction of Israel if it wants to be a partner for peace.
At a White House news conference, Mr. Bush stressed he does not believe Hamas can be a part of the peace process while it still has an armed wing.
He called the Hamas victory in the Palestinian elections a wake-up call for the Palestinian leadership on the need for reform. But he added he hopes Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas remains in power.
Israel's acting prime minister, Ehud Olmert, has said Israel will not work with a Hamas-led government. Israeli Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni urged the European Union to take a firm stance against Hamas, calling it a terrorist government.
