Pakistan has condemned an apparent U.S. airstrike that killed at least 18 people, including women and children, in a tribal region near the country's border with Afghanistan. U.S. media reports, citing unnamed intelligence sources, say the C.I.A. (Central Intelligence Agency) carried out Friday's attack.
They say it targeted Osama bin Laden's deputy, Ayman al-Zawahiri. There has been no official confirmation of U.S. involvement in the attack or whether al-Zawahiri was the intended target.
However, Pakistan's foreign minister says a preliminary investigation suggests a foreign presence in the area and that the strikes came from across the border. Pakistani officials also said al-Qaida's number two in command was not in the village of Damadola at the time of the bombing. Pakistan today (Saturday) summoned the U.S. ambassador to protest the attack.
