Palestinian gunmen on stolen bulldozers smashed through the Gaza Strip border with Egypt on Wednesday, as tensions continued to mount ahead of parliamentary elections set for later this month.
Egyptian border police fired warning shots to drive off scores of Palestinians who attempted to rush through the opening and into Egypt.
The gunmen belong to the al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigades, a renegade faction of the ruling Fatah party. They are demanding the release of a jailed leader linked to the kidnapping of three Britons last week, and are vowing to block Palestinian legislative elections set for January 25th, unless the suspect is released.
Israel ceded control of the crossing to the Palestinians last month, as part of a U.S.-brokered deal. Gunmen have forced officials to shut the crossing several times since then.
