The Japanese government has decided to proceed with the United States in the development of a joint missile defense system.
Japan's Chief Cabinet Secretary Shinzo Abe said today (Saturday) that Japan needs to be able to defend itself against ballistic missiles.
Tokyo and Washington began research on a joint missile defense system after North Korea test-fired a long-range missile in 1998, which flew over northern Japan.
