성탄절을 맞아 미국인 가정의 실내장식용으로 팔린 크리스마스 튜리의 수는 총 2700만 그루에 달했습니다. 그리고 그중 삼분의 일은 미국 태평양연안, 서북쪽, 삼림지대에서 자랐습니다.
미국인들은 11월 네 번째 목요일에 맞이하는 추수감사절이 지나자 마자, 성탄절에 대비해 크기와 모양 그리고 종류가 저마다 다른 사철나무를 구입해 집안에 세웁니다.
나무 맨 꼭대기에는 천사나 별모양의 장식품을 꽂아놓고 나무주변에는 온갖 현란한 색상의 각양각생의 조그만 장식품등을 메답니다.
집집마다의 특성이 돗보이는 부분이기도 합니다. 그러나 해가 가면서 인조 성탄절 나무가 실제 나무를 홋가하는 현상도 두드러지고 있어 생나무 재배업자들의 우려를 사고 있습니다. 미국의 소리 기자가 며칠 전 미국 서북부, 워싱턴주 한 성탄절 나무 전문재배 농장을 찾아 다음과 같은 보도를 전했습니다.
나무농장이 산속 깊숙히 자리하고 있어, 일반 트럭들이 들어갈수 없어 요즘에는 주로 헬리콥터기들이 동원되고 있습니다. 본 기자가 찾은 대형 나무농장의 주인 마크 스틸해머씨는 우선 나무들을 신속히 산밑으로 실어나르기 위해서는 헬리콥터기가 최상의 방편이라고 말합니다.
헬리콥터기 대여비용이 시간당 600달라이지만, 한시간안에 잘하면 천그루의 나무까지 실어 나를 수 있기 때문에 매우 효율적이라는 것입니다.
금년의 경우, 헬리콥터기 동원은 예년보다 그리 어렵지 않았고 더 큰 문제는, 필요한 만큼 충분한 수의 트럭들을 구하는 것이었다고 스틸해머씨는 말합니다. 일단 헬리콥터기가 산밑으로 나무들을 공수하면 그다음, 고객들에게 직접 나무를 운반하는 일은 트럭들의 몫이기 때문입니다.
올해에는 특히 허리케인이 시기적으로 성탄절보다 몇개월 앞서 지나갔기 때문에 큰 타격은 없었지만, 서북부 여러 주에 걸쳐 아직도 허리케인피해지역으로 보급품들을 트럭들이 수송하고 있어 나무농장들이 트럭들을 구하기가 그리 쉽지 않았다고 스틸해머씨는 고충을 털어놓습니다.
성탄절을 앞둔 시기는 신선한 사철나무들을 매일 시장에 재빨리 공급하는 일이 전쟁터를 방불케하는 치열한 싸움이라고 스틸해머씨는 지적합니다. 거기에 덧붙여 근년에는, 인조나무들과 경쟁하는 일도 만만치 않다고, 미국 크리스마스 트리 협회 신임회장으로 당선된 마크 스틸해머씨는 말합니다.
미국의 나무재배업자들은 특별 판촉기금을 조성함으로써 인조나무시장에 맞서 공세적인 대응책을 강구했다고 스틸해머씨는 밝혔습니다.

또 크리스마스 명절기간이 끝나 새해 1월 5일경이 되면 미국인가정들은 인조나무를 떼어내 지하실 벽장에 보관하고 또다시 성탄절이 다가오면 먼지를 털고 똑같은 장식품들을 꺼내 꾸미게 되는데 이는 전혀 전통을 지킨다고 볼수 없다는 것입니다.
생 나무의 신선한 내음이 집안을 가득 메울때 그 나무주변에 모여 가족들이 성탄절의 기본 의미를 또 성탄절 특유의 사랑의 의미를 함께 되새겨 보는 일이야말로 성탄절을 맞이하는 올바른 태도라고 스틸해머씨는 강조합니다.
현재 미국가정의 삼분의 일은 인조나무를 애용하는 미국가정의 수는 전체 삼분의 일에 달합니다. 스틸해머씨는 그같은 인조나무는 심각한 위협을 제기한다고 지적합니다. 물론 가격면에서 인조나무는 진짜 생나무보다 비싸지 않습니다. 그러나 해마다 기술이 개발되면서 요즘에는 오색의 전등이나 장식품들이 미리 부착된 인조나무들까지 등장하고 있습니다.
워싱턴주, 로체스터의 나무재배업자, 죤 틸만씨는 여러가지 어려움에도 불구하고 올해 수익을 올렸다고 전망했습니다. 지난달 11월 초부터 크리스마스 투리를 자르고 다듬고 고객들에게 수송하느라 거의 한시도 쉬지 않고 열심히 노력한 덕분이라는 것입니다.
전나무의 일종인, 노불 퍼(Noble Fir)들을 캘리포니아주 프레즈노로 수송하느라 트럭을 사용했다면서, 틸만씨는 대형냉장고로 홍콩에도 나무들을 수송했다고 밝힙니다. 올해 성탄절을 앞두고 틸만씨가 시장에 내다 판 전나무들은 2만 7천 그루에 달합니다.
미국에는 성탄절을 겨냥해 크리스마스 튜리를 재배하는 농장의 수가 전국에 2만 2천개소에 달합니다.

Fully a third of the 27-million live Christmas trees sold in the United States are grown on tree farms in the Pacific Northwest. That's where we sent Correspondent Tom Banse (BAHN-see) to check on the frenzied harvest.

"Yeah, helicopters are around $600 an hour, plus, but they move a lot of trees, probably a thousand trees in an hour, at least."

TEXT: The heavy lifting is not the hardest part, at least not this year. Mr. Steelhammer notes that shipping prices are higher than usual, and he's had a hard time finding enough trucks to deliver his lush greenery to customers around the country.

"With the hurricanes back there it's good when it happened it probably happened that early, not just a month ago. But they are still using a lot of trucks of course to bring supplies in for that, so we're competing with that."
TEXT: There's the daily battle to get fresh trees to market, and then there's a larger war to recapture market share from artificial trees. Mark Steelhammer is President-elect of the National Christmas Tree Association. He says U.S. tree growers are stepping up the offensive against fake trees by donating money to a special marketing fund.

"I have a real hard problem with thinking about tradition with young kids especially going to a store and getting the boxed up plastic one from China. To me, that's not traditional. Or pulling it out of the attic and dusting it off. I like real branches, real needles and real smell, you know."
TEXT: He says artificial trees present a serious threat. They now grace about one in three American households. A fake tree doesn't cost much more than a real one. It might even come with lights built in.
[OPT] Local growers have another challenge: a swelling inventory of Christmas trees. Mr. Steelhammer says a surplus developed because many tree farmers responded to the recent decade of good prices by planting more seedlings. Now wholesale prices are sinking, anywhere from 5 to 30 percent.

"Prices have come down a little and we'll still make good money. Those who have watched their operating expenses etcetera over the years and not gone out and gone too crazy on big new equipment will do fine, you know."

TEXT: Rochester, Washington tree grower John Tilman figures he'll still make money on his harvest this year. He's worked pretty much non-stop from early November to the second week in December?cutting, baling, and shipping Christmas trees.

TEXT: ...a truck that will take these Noble Firs to Fresno, California. Earlier, his crew filled a refrigerated container destined for Hong Kong. In all, he sent 27-thousand trees to market.
