New York and (northern English city of) Liverpool are set to honor former Beatle and pop icon John Lennon today (Thursday), on the 25th anniverary of his murder. In a ceremony in the center of Liverpool, where Lennon was born, fans and officials will create a shrine beneath a statue of the legendary Beatle.
Later in the day, the city will hold a memorial service. In New York City, hundreds of mourners are expected to gather at the Strawberry Fields section of Central Park and light candles.
The mentally derranged Mark Chapman shot Lennon on near his apartment building in New York on the night of December 8th, 1980, as the musician was returning from a recording studio.
