Most Japanese say they will not eat American beef if it comes back on the market because of continuing fears about mad cow disease.
Seventy-five percent of those who responded to a Kyodo news agency poll said they are unwilling to eat U.S. beef and prefer to buy domestic or Australian beef instead.
Japan had been the most lucrative overseas market for U.S. beef until 2003, when mad cow disease was found in a U.S. herd and Japan banned imports from the United States.
Mad cow disease, or bovine spongiform encephalopathy, is a degenerative disease that can cause fatal brain disorder in humans.
The United States has banned imports of Japanese beef since 2001, after Japan discovered mad cow disease in its herds.
