미국의 콘돌리자 라이스 국무 장관은 독일의 앙헬라 메르켈 총리에게 미국은 테러와의 전쟁에서 고문의 사용을 용납하지 않고 있음을 재확인했습니다.
라이스 장관과 메르켈 총리는 6일 베를린에서 회담을 가진후 공동 기자 회견을 갖고 미국중앙정보국, CIA가 테러 용의자들을 동부 유럽내 비밀 수용소로 이송하고 있다는 최근 주장들에 관해 논의했다고 말했습니다.
라이스 장관은 미국은 자국의 법과 국제 의무의 테두리 안에서 테러분자들에 맞서 싸우기 위한 모든 법적 수단을 동원할 것이라고 말하고, 고문의 사용을 용납하지않는다는 것을 재확인했습니다.
라이스 장관은 또한 메르켈 총리에게 미국은 동맹국들의 주권도 존중하고 있다고 장담했습니다. 라이스 장관은 닷새 일정의 유럽 순방의 일환으로 6일 중에 루마니아를 방문합니다.

U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice has reassured German Chancellor Angela Merkel that the United States does not condone the use of torture in the war against terrorism.
The two held a joint news conference today (Tuesday) in Berlin after holding talks.
They both said they discussed recent allegations that the CIA has been transporting terror suspects to secret prisons in Eastern Europe.
Ms. Merkel said new threats must be responded to, but that the United States and its allies must find a balance between democratic principles and letting intelligence services do their jobs.
Ms. Rice said the United States will use every legal means to fight terrorists, in her words, "within the framework of our laws and international obligations." The secretary also assured the German leader that Washington respects the sovereignty of its allies.
Ms. Rice will travel to Romania later today (Tuesday) as part of her five-day European trip.
