유럽연합은 교토의정서가 정한 목표들을 시한보다 2년앞서 달성할 것이라고 밝혔습니다.
금년초에 발효된 지구 기후변화에 관한 교토의정서에 따라 유럽연합은 온실가스 방출량을 오는 2012년까지 상당량 감소시켜야 합니다. 그러나 1일 발표된 유럽연합 보고서는 그 조약에 서명한 유럽연합 15개 회원국들은 오는 2010년까지 지난 1990년 수준 이하로 약 9%정도 온실가스 방출량을 줄일수 있을 것이라고 말했습니다.
이는 교토의정서가 의무화한 8% 감소량을 웃도는 수치인 것입니다. 유럽연합의 신생 10개 회원국들은 그 조약이 체결되었을 당시 유럽연합의 일부가 아니었으나 유럽연합은 이들 신생및 기존 총 25개 회원국들이 온실가스 방출량을 2010년까지 총 11%까지 감소시킬것으로 예상한다고 말했습니다.

The European Union has announced that it will meet targets set by the so-called Kyoto Protocol two years ahead of schedule. Under that treaty on climate change, which took effect this year, the European Union has until 2012 to significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
An EU report issued today (Thursday) says the 15 members who signed the treaty expect that by the year 2010 they will have reduced emissions by about nine percent below 1990 levels. That would be well below the eight percent reduction Kyoto mandates by 2012. The 10 newest EU members were not part of the group when the treaty was reached.
However, the EU says that they and the other 15 members expect to reduce emission levels by a combined 11 percent by 2010.
