Opponents to the U.S. death penalty are protesting what is expected to become the nation's one-thousandth execution since the Supreme Court reinstated capital punishment in 1976.
Robin Lovitt is scheduled to die late Wednesday in (the southeastern U.S. state of) Virginia unless Governor Mark Warner intervenes. Lovitt was convicted in 1999 of fatally stabbing a man with a pair of scissors during the robbery of a pool (billiards) hall in the suburbs of Washington, D.C.
Anti-death-penalty activists say they are expecting a larger-than-usual group of demonstrators to gather Wednesday to protest the event.
Two other men in the southern United States are scheduled to be executed later this week.
A Gallup poll last month showed the number of Americans supporting the death penalty is down to 64 percent, from a high of 80 percent in 1994.
