Retailers call the day after Thanksgiving 'Black Friday' because of the flurry of buying that turns many of their account ledgers from red (indicating a deficit) to black (showing a profit). Across the country, shoppers lined up outside stores before sunrise, hoping to get an early start on the annual gift-buying season.
Analysts examine store receipts from large retail chains such as Wal-Mart over these next few days for clues about the strength of the national economy. Last year, consumers spent some eight billion dollars on Black Friday alone. This year analysts project that spending to increase by about four percent.
