The al-Qaida in Iraq militant group says it has decided to kill two Moroccan embassy employees who were kidnapped last month. The group announced the decision today (Thursday) in a statement that appeared on an Islamist website.
It had earlier said the men would be put on trial in an Islamic court. Al-Qaida in Iraq, led by Jordanian militant Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, has claimed responsibility for executing numerous hostages, including diplomats from Egypt and Algeria.
Security was tightened in Iraq Thursday as Sunni Muslims celebrated the first day of Eid al-Fitr, a major three-day religious holiday which in past years has been marked by an increase in insurgent violence.
Most Shi'ite Muslims in Iraq are expected begin celebrations Friday. On Wednesday, a string of bombings and attacks across central Iraq killed and injured dozens of Iraqis.
