The death toll from a series of powerful bomb blasts in New Delhi has risen to more than 50 people, and Indian officials say they expect it to rise.
Prime Minister Manmohan Singh expressed shock and distress at today's (Saturday's) blasts, which he implied were the work of terrorists. He did not identify who he thought was responsible, but he urged people to remain calm and said India will win the battle against terrorism.
The head of his ruling Congress party, Sonia Gandhi, condemned the killing of innocent people as an act of terrorism.
Authorities have stepped up security across the country and ordered the closure of all markets in the capital.
Officials say the blasts occurred within minutes of each other, indicating a coordinated attack.
The first explosion rocked the city's Paharganj bazaar district, which was crowded with shoppers preparing for India's biggest Hindu festival of lights, Diwali. Two more blasts took place in crowded markets and the fourth on a bus.
