Japanese media say the head of the country's most powerful business lobby secretly met with China's president last month to discuss Japanese Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi's visits to a controversial war shrine.
Hiroshi Okuda, chairman of Japan Business Federation and head of Toyota Motor Corporation, is reported to have met in Beijing on September 30th with President Hu Jintao to discuss the impact of the visits on bilateral economic relations.
No details of the talks have been released.
Mr. Koizumi sparked angry protests from China and South Korea on Monday when he prayed at the Yasukuni Shrine, which honors Japan's war dead, including World War Two war criminals.
Mr. Koizumi's annual shrine visits have prompted concern among Japanese businesses that their interests in China will be harmed, including the likelihood of a possible boycott of Japanese products.
