전 세계 과학자들이 배아 줄기 세포에 관해 연구할 수 있는 새로운 연구소가 한국에 개설됐습니다.
한국의 과학자 황우석 박사가 이끄는 서울의 [세계 줄기 세포 허브]는 국제 콘소시움의 줄기 세포에 관한 연구의 본부 역할을 하게 될 것입니다. 미국 서부의 샌프란시스코와 영국에도 지부가 설치될 예정입니다.
세계 줄기 세포 허브는 미국 같은 나라의 과학자들이 줄기 세포 연구에 대한 자국 정부의 제한을 피할 수 있도록 하기 위해서 고안됐습니다. 배아 줄기 세포를 추출하는 과정에서 인간 배아가 파괴됩니다.
반대자들은 그같은 과정이 잠재적인 인간을 살해하는 것이라고 주장하고 있습니다. 그러나, 많은 과학자들은 줄기 세포 연구가 암과 알치하이머 같은 질병의 치료로 이어질 수 있다고 말하고 있습니다.

South Korea has opened a new institution to allow researchers around the world to study embryonic stem cells. Led by South Korean scientist Hwang Woo-suk, the World Stem Cell Hub in Seoul will serve as the main center of an international consortium's research on stem cells.
Satellite clinics will also be set up in (the western U.S. city of) San Francisco and in England. The center is intended to allow scientists from countries such as the United States to get around their own government's restrictions on stem cell research.
Generating embryonic stem cells often includes destroying human embryos, a practice that opponents say kills a potential human being. However, many scientists say stem cell research could lead to cures for such illnesses as cancer and Alzheimer's disease.
